RECRUITMENT HISTORY

The Ghana Police Service has six (6) Training Schools. These are:
1. The National Police Training School, formerly National Police Training Depot which was established in 1930 for training recruits, under cadet officers (Direct Entrants), refresher and promotion courses for other ranks.
2. The Sub Training Depots now Police Training Schools are at
(a) Kumasi in the Ashanti Region established in 1948/49 for refresher courses and training of recruits.
(b) Koforidua in the Eastern Region established in 1952 for training recruits.
(c) Ho in the Volta Region established in 1961 for training recruits.
(d) Winneba in the Central Region established in 1970 for training recruits.
(e) Pwalugu in the Upper East Region established in 2004 for training recruits
COMMANDERS:
1. THE NATIONAL POLICE TRAINING SCHOOL (NPTS), ACCRA is under the Command of Chief Superintendent/Mr. James Azumah Abass-Abaah.
The Commanding Officer holds a B.A. (Hons) Degree in English and Sociology from the University of Ghana, Legon. He also has a Diploma in Education and Certificates in Human Rights (I.C.I.T.A.P) Criminal Investigation, Horticulture and Instructional Certificates in Human Dignity (I.P.T.F.)
He was the Officer Commanding the Regional Police Training School in Winneba from 1999 to 2001. He was also the Officer Commanding the Parliamentary Protection Unit from 2004 to 2005 and the District Commander of Police in the Hohoe District from 2003 to 2004.
For United Nations Operations, he was a Team Leader, Special Police Instructor and Regional Police Training Co-ordinator BRCKO from 1998 to 1999 in Bosnia Herzegovinia. Between September 2001 and 2003, he was a Team Leader, Chief of Operations and Special Advisor on Traffic Management in United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL).
2. HO PTS is headed by DSP/Mr. Isaac Kwadwo Asante. He holds M.A. Degree in Adult Education and B.A. (Hons) Degree in Sociology from University of
Ghana, Legon. He also has Certificate in Adolescent Reproductive Health (ARH) Management in Kenya and a Certificate in Management from Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).
3. PWALUGU PTS is headed by DSP/Mr. Darko Offei Lomotey. He holds B.A. (Hons) Degree in Social Science and Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Coast. He also has a Diploma in Trainer of Trainers in Basic Police Skills from International Investigative Training Assistance Programme (I.C.I.T.A.P), a Certificate in CA and M from GIMPA and a Certificate in Microsoft Office.
4. KOFORIDUA PTS is headed by ASP/Mr. Jonathan Nii Akwetteh Lamiayee Kwabena Lamptey. He holds B.A. (Hons) Degree in Sociology from the University of Ghana, Legon. He also has a Certificate in Microsoft Office. He took part in the United Nations Mission in Kosovo.
5. WINNEBA PTS is headed by ASP/Mr. Hans Evans Setsor. He holds B.ED Degree in Psychology from the University of Cape Coast and Diploma in Trainer of Trainers in Basic Police Skills (I.C.I.T.A.P). He also has a Certificate in Microsoft Office.
6. KUMASI PTS is headed by ASP/Mr. Emmanuel Aryee Akunnor. He holds B.A. (Hons) Degree in Sociology from University of Cape Coast. He also has a Certificate in Microsoft Office. He took part in United Nations Mission in East Timor.
SUBJECTS TAUGHT IN THE POLICE TRAINING SCHOOLS
Subjects taught in all the Training Schools include Practical Police Duties, Police Service Instructions, Professional Police Ethics, Police Basic Officer Skills, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Criminal Investigation, Law of Evidence, Acts and Decrees, Criminology English and Report Writing. Human Rights Domestic Violence.
The Liberal Subjects include French, Social Psychology, Map Reading, STDs/HIV/AIDS and First Aid.
The recruits are also taken through Physical Training, Arms and Foot Drill, Tae-Kwan do, Judo and weapon Training. Musketry is taught and recruits are made to shoot at a Shooting Range.
TRAINING PROGRAMME:
The training programme has six months duration. For each month (Squad), all the subjects are taught and recruits are examined at the end of the month. DAILY ACTIVITIES FOR WEEKDAYS:

NOTE: What used to be Fatigue Squad for one month is now replaced with one week orientation for all fresh recruits before they are sworn in.
On Wednesdays between 3.00 P.M. and 5.00 P.M. is for Games.
On Sundays between 9.30 A.M. and 12.30 P.M. Christians are permitted to attend Church Service Within the campus.
Every Friday Muslim recruits are permitted to attend Mosque between 1.00p.m. and 2.00p.m within the campus.
Tae-Kwan do and Judo alternate with Physical Training period
Musketry is done in the third month and the period for the parade/general fatigue is used. Shooting is done at the end of the training.
Practical involvement in the Basic Officer Skills also alternates the general cleaning/ musketry period
Passing out parade is organized at the end of the sixth month after recruits are tested in all aspects of the training.
After the passing out parade, Commendation Service is organized for the newly Recruits Constables.

ELIGIBILITY
- Be a Ghanaian by birth.
- Be of good character with no criminal record.
- Be not less than 18 years and not more than 25 years.
- Be medically fit by Ghana Police Service standard.
- Be of minimum height 5‘8” feet for males and 5‘4” feet for females.
- Be a holder of SSSCE with passes in five subjects including English and Mathematics. Limited vacancies for JSS/MSLC for the Protective Unit (PU)
MODE OF APPLICATION
Qualified candidates are short listed from a pool of applicants who report at the various enlistment centers as may from time to time be published.
Candidates who meet the requirements go through written examination after which those who pass are selected for medical examination and later called to commence training at the various training schools.
The Enlistment Process has for the past three years been regionally based. The following centers are used for the exercise.
All prospective candidates must come along with the following
- Original and photocopies of certificates
- Four current passport size photographs
- Original and photocopies of Birth Certificates
- Registration & Examination fees of ¢100,000.00
