POLICE ADMINISTRATION COMMENDS UNICEF AND AWLA

The Deputy Inspector General of Police Mrs. Elizabeth Mills Robertson, on behalf of the Police Administration, has commended the African Women Lawyers Association and UNICEF for organizing and sponsoring a three week training workshop for prosecutors of the Ghana Police Service.

Mrs. Robertson said this during the opening ceremony of a course on Juvenile justice and other human rights laws relating to children for police prosecutors in Accra on Monday 27th October 2008.  The programme which is aimed at building the capacity of the participants was organized by the African Women Lawyers Association { AWLA} and sponsored by UNICEF. The programme, which constitutes the first of series of such courses, attracted eighty (80) participants from all the regions in Ghana including DSP Patience Quaye the head of the newly formed Anti-Human Trafficking Unit at the CID Headquartes.

A child Protection officer from UNICEF, Mr.Eric Appiah Okrah who represented his organization articulated the need to build the capacity of police prosecutors who handle juveniles so as to be effective in prosecution efforts while taking into consideration of their psychological needs.

The Executive Director of AWLA, Ms. Edna Kuma unveiled that the Association which has previously organized similar courses for the police saw the need to organize this particular course because of the necessity to give juveniles special attention. Also, in view of the passage of the Juvenile Justice Act, there was the need to keep the police abreast with the provisions of the Act.

The course representative Superintendent Ernest K. Owusu expressed optimism of the outcome of the course and promised that he and his colleagues will make good use of whatever is learnt so as to take issues of Juvenile Justice to another dimension.

Also present to grace the occasion was Mrs. Joana Osei-Poku, Director General of Police Human Resource Department.
