GERMANY DONATES TO THE GHANA POLICE SERVICE

The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany has made a donation of vehicles and assorted items to the Ghana Police Service to support them in their Peacekeeping mission preparation.

Speaking at a ceremony to present the items to the service, His Excellency the German Ambassador to Ghana, Dr.Marius Haas disclosed that the German Governments has earmarked additional funding for Pre Sat Selection and related training measures for 2010.He also noted that the Ghana Police Service had been part of many UN peace keeping missions world wide and during those times had given their lives in the service of peace.

Dr. Marius Haas also stated that the African Union had declared 2010 the African Year of Peace and Security in its commitment to further promote peace processes in Africa, and in order to curb these transgression, the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) had been developed.

On his part, the Honourable Deputy Minister for the Interior Dr. Kwasi Apea-Kubi who delivered an acceptance speech on behalf of the Minister for the Interior said that the German Government undoubtedly stood out as a prominent and reliable friend in the area of providing support in times of need and said the donation made was a big boost and a welcome package.

He entreated the Police Administration to effectively partner the German Technical Corporation (GTZ) to put in place training programmes that will ensure the most efficient use of the vehicles, and assured that with this kind of support, the Ghana Police Service could adopt, innovate and constantly renew its capabilities to face the daunting challenges before it.

The Inspector -General of Police, Mr. Paul Quaye in his welcome address said that the German Government had been of immense assistance to the Ghana Police Service especially in the area of training programmes of the Service.

He mentioned some programmes the German Government had sponsored through the GTZ as the Training of Trainers Courses for some 44 Police Personnel in Accra and Kumasi that enabled the service to produce quality trainers who measure up to the International standards, and the Pre-Sat Selection Training that developed the potential of 452 Police Officers in order to give equal opportunities to all police personnel who have been nominated to participate in the UN/AU selection tests.

The IGP added that the GTZ had made projections for the future and had shown positive commitments to ensure that all projects which have been embarked to take-off as scheduled and had deposited GH¢30,000 into their account for the execution of specific projects.

The items donated to the  Service included five(5) Toyota Land Cruiser specialized driver training vehicles, two(2) photocopier machines and a quantity of audio equipment to assist the peace support operations of the Police Service.
