DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND VICTIMS SUPPORT UNIT (DOVVSU) LAUNCHES 2015 STRATEGIC PLAN
The Deputy Minister for the Interior, Dr. Kwasi Akyem Apea-Kubi has said that government has decided to intensify public education against negative socio-cultural practices that discriminate against women, and enact other relevant legislations to safeguard the dignity of women and create conditions for their advancement.
He said this when he was delivering the key note address on behalf of the Interior Minister, Mr. Cletus Avoka at the launch of a 5-year Strategic Plan of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service (DOVVSU) at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel on Thursday 21st January, 2010.
Dr. Apea-Kubi commended DOVVSU for having successfully handled more than 95,000 cases of domestic violence and child abuse, thereby bringing relief to thousands of people, especially women and children. He however, decried the problems facing the Unit, and called on the public to support them.
On her part, the Hon. Minister of Women and Children Affairs, through her Chief Director, Mrs. Nancy Djah underscored the crucial role that DOVVSU was playing in the protection and advancement of women and children and assured them of the Ministry’s support. She said that her ministry was making efforts to procure some office equipment, furniture and vehicles for the Unit.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Paul Quaye also commended DOVVSU, saying that the Unit had lived up to expectation, having been in the fore-front in the fight for rights of the vulnerable in society.
He highlighted the key strategic plans for the Unit as capacity building, growth and expansion and advocacy, and called for all hands to be on deck. He assured the Unit that the Police Administration would do the best within its budgetary allocation to resource the Unit.
In her presentation the National Co-ordinating Director of DOVVSU, Chief Superintendent Elizabeth Dassah enumerated some of challenges facing the Unit as lack of office space and equipment, transport (vehicles) and called for public support.
She however, commended UNICEF, UNFPA and UNDP for supporting the Unit in terms of funding and capacity building.
