Ghana Police Service

 Press Release

The Police wishes to caution the general public that it would not take kindly to any person or group of persons who would take the laws into their own hands and disrupt lawful activities of any state security agency.

The Police had to resort to the use of teargas to disperse the irate mob, which besieged the frontage of the Regional Headquarters of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), Accra on Thursday 13th August 2009.

The crowd which besieged the BNI Headquarters when the former Information and National Orientation Minister, Hon. Asamoah Boateng had been invited for investigation became lawless and violent, blocking the Obasanjo Way, setting fire in the middle of the road and creating traffic congestion.

The mob, which was wielding offensive weapons like stones, sticks, clubs and cudgels also set fire to AMA refuse bins, took BNI officers hostage, attacked Police and innocent pedestrians and attempted to smash the windscreens of vehicles plying the highway.

All attempts by the Police to maintain some sanity was fiercely resisted by the mob, compelling them to resort to the use of tear gas to maintain law and order.

The Police Administration would therefore like to warn members of the public who have the penchant for organizing mobs to cause trouble in the country to desist as they would be dealt with accordingly with the law.
