TRAINING OF TRAINERS (TOT) FOR POLICE ENDS

The Director-General of  Human Resource Development of the Ghana Police  Service, COP/Mrs. Joana Osei-Poku says the challenges of today’s policing requires a paradigm shift from the previous rigid classroom note learning situation to a more practical approach in training so as to improve the overall professionalism, skills and competencies of personnel.

COP/Mrs. Joana Osei-Poku disclosed this at the closing ceremony of the end of   a 2 week Training of Trainers (TOT) course organized by the Ghana Police Service at the Police Headquarters in Accra. Thirty three (33) participants underwent the training which was designed to focus on instructional methods that are activity based, interactive, and with real life scenarios.

Speaking, COP/ Mrs. Joana Osei-Poku said the beneficiaries of the programme who are all instructors at the various Training Schools were expected to imbibe and apply the approach at the Schools as well as during sessions of the on-going re-training programmes. She said it was the desire of the Administration that being products of the course they would serve as torch bearers in their various endeavours as personnel travel on the road to desirable attitudinal change in the service.

She further   said that, it was imperative that Policemen and women deployed for general duties are competent, assertive, knowledgeable, confident and capable of thinking on their feet, because they are the ambassadors of the Administration in the field, who confront the unknown and frequently interact with the general public, and have limited periods or sometimes seconds to make very crucial decisions, a single error of which brings disastrous consequences. She urged trainers to progressively build their competencies and sustain their confidence.

On his part, Course Leader, DSP Joseph Owusu Bempah appealed to the Administration and the Management of the Police Service to sustain these training programmes to further enhance their efficiencies. He also implored the authorities to include the Regional and Divisional Commanders and Station Officers in the training to further sharpen their skills.

In   attendance were DCOP/ Mr. Ofosu   Mensah Gyeabour, DCOP/ Dr.  Peter    Wiredu and DCOP/Mr. George Anko-Bil who urged participants to practice what they had  been taught since, society is dynamic and change was important in every institution.
