The top hierarchy of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Service, on May 11, 2012 met with the Tema Port Authority to discuss the issue of Insecure Loading and Overloading of trucks from the port.
The meeting was necessitated by observation on the part of the MTTU and public outcry over the danger “container” and overloaded trucks from the port poses to other road users.
Based on the above concern, the Police MTTU and the Port management team met on 15th May 2012 at Tema to find solutions to the concerns raised.
The Deputy Commander of the National MTTU, Chief Superintendent Samuel Tetteh led the team from Accra and joined Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge Tema Harbour Police ACP/Nana Asamoah. The Port Authority, on the other hand, was led by the Acting Director- Captain Owusu Koranteng who was also the chairman of the meeting.
The Deputy Commander of the National MTTU, Chief Superintendent Tetteh started the discussions by raising certain dangers associated with trucks from the port, citing insecure “container” loading, over loading and abuse of the height limit rule.
He further explained that the MTTU will be more effective in enforcing truck related offences when there is a strong collaboration with the port authority.
In responding, the port authority blamed recalcitrant drivers for such unlawful practices. According to them, the above bad practices are done outside the port because their standardized operational order will not tolerate such indiscipline.
The meeting brought to light certain collaboration needed to ensure effective enforcement. For that matter both parties agreed to form a standing committee. It is believed the committee will ensure better understanding of port operations which will eventually help in tracking the bad nuts on our roads.
The meeting ended with a tour of the port. The Police team was taken around by the head of Tema port security COL. A. Ansu to familiarize themselves with some of the key activities at the port. Places visited included the main security gate, the height measuring point and the golden jubilee terminal.
