MTTU Activities Undertaken

In order to fulfil its objectives and meet the challenges outlined, the Unit undertakes the following activities and many more.
Traffic personnel are assigned to decongest areas prone to traffic jams and congestion, particularly intersections and roundabouts, during morning and evening rush hours. In Accra, there are over 100 such traffic intersections.
Some traffic points even have personnel manning them throughout the day.

Traffic personnel are also assigned to accident-prone areas to check overspeeding and drunk driving as well as other acts of indiscipline. Radar guns and Alco Sensors or breathalyzers are used during such exercises.

Announced and unannounced operations are often organised to bring recalcitrant drivers to book. For example, at the onset of raining seasons, drivers are warned to check their tyres and wipers after which an operation is organised.

Personnel are also to be at state functions controlling traffic and escorting dignitaries [Motor Riders].

In Accra, the Unit has one recovery truck at the moment, which is employed to tow disabled vehicles that cause road obstructions.

In Accra, the Unit has a small number of Clamps for both small and big vehicles. These are used to check unauthorised parking.

In Accra, the Unit has a Driver Education Section with a seating capacity of a little over 100 chairs where both drivers and members of the general public are taken through lessons on Road Safety. Some of the lessons taught are:
Road Traffic Rules and Regulations
Highway Code
The mental requirements of a driver
Defensive driving
Driver behaviour and courtesy
Causes and prevention of Road accidents, etc.
Driver Education is also done through the Media and also at lorry parks.

Personnel at the accident section investigate all accident cases and compile data for information of National Road Safety Commission and Police Headquarters.
It must be stated that outside Accra, similar activities are undertaken, except that these areas do not have Clamps and Towing vehicles. In line with the activities undertaken, the underlisted teams are currently in place.

-Education team
-General patrols, clamping and abuse of Red Traffic Light team
-Overspeeding and drunk driving
-Traffic Control and Management
-Night patrols
-Towing team
