Mounted Squadron

HISTORY
Eight horses were purchased in Nigeria to form Mounted branch in Accra. Unfortunately, one of them was killed while embarked at lagos, but on 10th Hune, 1940 the remaining seven were installed in the stable built fro them close to the edge of the beach behind the Christianbory Police Station. Horse exercises were started as soon as the horses were settled, and on the 22nd of September, 1940 patrol work started. Units of Mounted branch of the Force were based in Accra, Tamale, and Keta. The number of horses in 1958 was as follows:
Accra - 21
Kumasi - 17
Keta - 2

The Mounted branch provided the ceremonial escort on state occasions and when not employed the Unit was used for patrol especially along the borders and also for crowd control. Units of the Mounted Squadron was maintained in Accra and Tamale. The two horses based at Keta were removed to Accra on 1st February, 1960 as their services were no more required in that area.

FUNCTIONS AND INITIATIVES
The functions of the Mounted Squadron include crowd and riot controls during demonstrations and at the stadium during football matches. Ceremonially, the Mounted Squadron is charged with the escort of the President during celebrations of Republic days and opening of Parliament. The Mounted Squadron also act as sentries/Lancers during presentaiton of credertials by foreign envoys.
